Hazem Kais
Class of 2017
Chouf, Mount Lebanon
February, 1994
Since graduating, Hazem Kais has developed a practice centered on material experimentation, textile innovation, and fabrication, exploring the relationship between fabrics, the body, and form. His work investigates natural dyes, cultural fashion traditions, fiber research, and sustainable making processes, integrating these explorations into both garments and objects. He has worked on a range of social and sustainable fashion initiatives, including as Creative Director of Civvies, a sustainable fashion brand in Lebanon, and at The Master Peace, where he developed garments and homeware using wool and other natural materials.
In 2019, Hazem founded GOODKILL, an experimental ready-to-wear label through which he explores free-form design, textile development, product design, and material-led innovation. The brand has been featured through installations and exhibitions in Lebanon and internationally, including Dating Dopa-mine at The Slow Concept Store in Beirut and Finding Identity at The Cutting Studio, M7 in Qatar.
Alongside his design practice, Hazem has built a strong career in fashion education. He taught textile design, textile development, fabric manipulation, hand-dyeing, printing, felting, and fiber research at ALBA’s School of Fashion from 2020 to 2025, and previously taught natural dye experimentation and development at Creative Space Beirut. In 2024, he joined the Lebanese American University’s School of Architecture and Design as an Adjunct Instructor, teaching fashion design courses focused on concept creation and design development.
Through both his teaching and design work, Hazem continues to push the boundaries of material exploration while encouraging new generations of designers to engage critically with sustainability, craftsmanship, and innovation.
