Caroline Shlala-Simonelli
Creative Space Beirut’s Mentor
March 18, 1938 - November 22, 2024
Caroline Shlala-Simonelli was an extraordinary fashion designer, educator, and visionary whose legacy continues to inspire generations of creators. Known for her mastery of draping and couture craftsmanship, Caroline’s career was defined by a deep reverence for the artistry of design. Her work radiated elegance, marked by timeless silhouettes and meticulous attention to detail, embodying a rare blend of precision and soul.
Caroline built a distinguished career as Head Dress Designer at Liz Claiborne and Head Collection Designer at Mollie Parnis New York. She also launched her own couture and ready-to-wear collections, which were featured in leading retailers like Bloomingdale’s and Saks Fifth Avenue. With decades of experience, Caroline brought her expertise to the classroom, transforming her roles at Parsons The New School for design, the Fashion Institute of Technology and Pratt Institute, into platforms for discovery and growth. Her hands-on teaching style and commitment to nurturing individuality sparked countless creative journeys, inspiring her students to explore the profound depths of their potential.
In 2011, alongside her former Parsons student Sarah Hermez, Caroline cofounded Creative Space Beirut, a free fashion design school in Lebanon. Together, they envisioned a space where fashion could transcend commercial realms to become a force for empowerment and change. The school, which continues to break barriers for talented youth from underserved communities, stands as a testament to Caroline’s unwavering belief in the transformative power of education and creativity. Caroline traveled to Beirut twice a year to share her wealth of knowledge, embodying her unwavering commitment to the next generation of designers. Her visits were cherished by the Creative Space Beirut family, marking the highlight of each year.
Caroline saw fashion not only as an art form but also as a means to empower, to heal, and to connect. Her life was a tapestry of beauty, wisdom, and generosity, woven through the countless lives she touched and the lessons she imparted. She passed away on November 22, 2024, surrounded by her daughters and loved ones. Her legacy was celebrated in a heartfelt memorial service attended by her adoring family, friends, colleagues, and students—a fitting tribute to a life that continues to inspire creativity and purpose.
Caroline’s spirit will live on in every lesson, every stitch, every drape and every life transformed through Creative Space Beirut.
