Mostafa Al Sous
Baw7 - 2025
Moustafa Al Sous’s collection is a cathartic exploration of long-repressed trauma, tracing a deeply personal journey that began in childhood and spanned two decades. Through these garments, the designer confronts the silence and stigma surrounding psychological wounds, transforming private suffering into tactile form. The work grapples with themes of repression, bodily alienation, and emotional transference, drawing on materiality to express what often remains unsaid.
Fabrics sourced from bedsheets, symbols of intimacy, memory, and vulnerability, are manipulated through layering, binding, and unconventional construction. Silicone applications attempt, and often fail, to conceal the textures beneath, mirroring the tension between exposure and concealment. Waxed veins, batik-dyed surfaces, and crushed paper-metal details evoke the physical residues of trauma, while lace inserts signal fragility, transparency, and the negotiation of gendered and sexual identities. A central piece brings together the collection’s varied textures and techniques, acting as a concentrated site of memory and healing. The silhouettes are fluid and adaptable, challenging fixed categories and offering space for transformation. The final works do not seek resolution but mark a beginning, an act of articulation after years of silence.
