Abdallah Shehan
CLASS OF 2028
Deir El Zor, Syria
March, 2003
Born in Al-Bukamal, a border town between Syria and Iraq, Abdallah’s education was cut short by the Syrian Civil War, pushing him into work at a young age. After his parents separated, he moved between different trades, blacksmithing, barbering, tailoring. By the age of ten, he had already gravitated toward sewing, later working in clothing workshops where he collected leftover fabrics to make garments of his own. When conflict reached his hometown, he fled to Damascus, determined to develop his skills further. There, he worked in a bag-making factory, but quickly realized that sewing alone could not contain his curiosity. In 2017, he settled in Lebanon, navigating years of work in restaurants, upholstery factories, and tailoring jobs. His understanding of fashion began to shift. Though the work sharpened his skills, it also revealed how restrictive factory work could be. Seeking more than production alone, he joined specialized fashion companies, where he discovered fashion as a practice that extends beyond making and selling garments. This turning point led him to create his own dresses and personal designs, opening the door to design as a creative and artistic field. With no academic background in fashion, Abdallah had never imagined design as a possibility until he discovered Creative Space Beirut. For the first time, fashion opened up as a space for thinking, creating, and expressing. Today, he describes CSB as “the place where I belong.” He is dedicated to learning and improving every day - both in design and in his pursuit of the English language - approaching each challenge with focus and humility.
