Patternmaking & Drafting with Sarkis Assadourian

Description
The objective of this workshop is to learn the fundamental elements of basic patternmaking and drafting. The attendees will gain a more thorough understanding of the entire process from start to finish through the creation of shirts, skirts and other pieces. The workshop aims to teach participants how to create pieces that are constructed carefully and have an aesthetic outcome.

Instructor
With more than 20 years of experience as a designer and teacher, Sarkis Assadourian is Creative Space Beirut’s patternmaking and drafting instructor. Sarkis has mentored an array of renowned designers, including Krikor Jabotian, Hussein Bazaza, Rami Kadi, Alaa Najd, Elie Baroud and Azzi and Osta, all of whom worked under his guidance before graduating from ESMOD.

An ESMOD fashion design and pattern drafter graduate himself, Sarkis has earned prestigious awards throughout his career – two of which were first prize for Elie Saab’s Patternmaking and Drafting competition. In addition to this, he was also the head designer of the Mission Fashion television show by Elie Saab on LBC, and Fashion Star – a television program by Reem Acra broadcasted on Dubai One. Sarkis Assadourian has designed more than 50 bespoke evening and bridal gowns as well as theatrical costumes.

Fashion Collection
with Shermeen Tabet

(March 16th, 2020)

Description This course is aimed at those who would like to explore the fashion design process, but have little or no prior experience. They will be taught fundamental skills such as choosing a concept, various research methods, sketchbook creation, developing ideas into fashion sketches, designs and a collection line-up (without garment making). Participants will be asked to bring their own scissors, paint and pencils.

Instructor Shermeen Tabet is an instructor of Fashion Design at Creative Space. She has an AA Degree in Graphic Design from LAU and a BA in Fashion Design with Print from Central Saint Martins. She began her career in Fashion by interning at Alexander McQueen, Isabel Marant, and Proenza Schouler and continued on to work a full time designer at Narciso Rodriguez. She started teaching Fashion Design 3 years ago when she moved back to Beirut.

Knitting
with Elie Mouhanna

(March 19th, 2020)

Description
Knitting is a creative process in which yarn is manipulated to create a textile or fabric. This workshop will introduce the fundamental principles of knitting and will provide the necessary technical and theoretical tools in order to master the practice and develop skills. The participants will explore different knitting techniques used to produce different patterns. The outcome will be a scarf that would incorporate on eor more of the learned techniques.

Instructor
Elie Mouhanna is an artist, designer, self-taught crocheter & knitter and founder of Marṣabēn. Elie graduated with an MA in Graphic Design from the Holy Spirit University of Kaslik (USEK), but went on to launch his career as an artist. This transition was accompanied by a persistent development of a personal relationship with crochet and knitting. Years later, Elie thought it was time to expand upon his skill and expose his textile-based projects, so Marṣabēn was born.

Storytelling for Brands
with Nasri Atallah

Description
This 2-day workshop will focus on storytelling for brands while considering marketing, brand story and founder story. Ultimately, this intense course will help people find their stories and connect to them. Ideal for those behind start-ups, fashion brands and ad agencies, this workshop will also be aimed at those who work in accounts, fashion, luxury, mature corporate environments and family businesses.

Instructor
Nasri Atallah is a British-Lebanese writer, journalist, producer and documentary filmmaker. In 2019, he co-founded Last Floor Productions with Daniel Habib and Firas Abou Fakher, a production house dedicated to creating character-driven genre fiction for television, film and digital platforms focused on Arab stories around the world.

His writing has appeared in publications including The Guardian, GQ Middle East, GQ India, Little White Lies, Monocle, Brownbook, and Time Out. He is a regular guest on the BBC Arts Hour. In 2012 he published a best-selling collection of stories & essays, Our Man in Beirut (Turning Point Books) and has contributed to many anthologies.

For over a decade he has worked in various ways to produce, promote and export film, digital content, music, writing, mainly from the Middle East. He has advised artists, brands & non-profits in the creative industries on storytelling & strategy. Some of the brands and organizations he has worked with include Mercedes Benz, HSBC, Red Bull, Lebanese Tourism Ministry, Lebelik, The Wanton Bishops, UNESCO, Wickerpark Music Festival, Movimenta Festival (Nice), Photome Photography Festival, the government of Guinea, to name a few.

Nasri studied Politics at the American University of Beirut (BA), International Politics of the Middle East at the SOAS, University of London (MSc), entrepreneurship with Babson College & UCL School of Management. He also completed the acclaimed Writing A Novel course at Faber Academy in London.

Make up for Fashion

Description
This workshop is an introduction to editorial makeup in fashion. From inspiration and research to look development and application, the participants will learn the techniques  of makeup for fashion shoots and runways. The workshop will introduce the necessary kits and tools, maintenance and set up, and types of looks such as the nude look and smokey eye.

Instructor
Moe Rida graduated from Notre Dame University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Advertising and Marketing. He works as a freelance makeup artist for photo shoots, editorials and campaigns.

Fashion Business
with Yesr Saab

Description
This workshop focuses on formulating a viable business model in the fashion industry. Participants will learn how to assess opportunities and risks, set a business structure, understand a buyer's mind, create and review  the fashion year plan and sales projections, and learn about strategies in selling fashion collections locally and internationally. This workshop will contain a series of slides sessions, discussions, reading material and group work projects, resulting in a final presentation of a business model.

Instructor
Yesr Saab graduated with a BA in Graphic Design from AUB. Her major granted her a solid base and a great experience working in advertising at Impact BBDO Lebanon and Tabbah Jewelry. Driven by this practice, Yesr pursued her passion for fashion and graduated with an MBA in luxury goods and fashion industries from Mod’Art international in Paris. Yesr's interests in the business aspect of fashion enabled her to work at Ralph Lauren’s Luxury Sales and Marketing office in Paris. This springboard provided her with international exposure to the continuous flux of the fashion industry, and brought her back to explore her Lebanese roots as a marketing manager at Abed Mahfouz Couture and Esposa Group. Yesr also joined the Lebanese American University (LAU) as a part-time faculty member in the school of architecture and design where she created the Fashion entrepreneurship program for rising designers to develop the business skills needed to open a startup in the fashion industry.

Textile Printing

Description
Using techniques such as drawing, painting and stamping, participants will learn to create their own prints and motifs from visuals that they produce through research and inspiration.  The workshop will also demonstrate how to digitize their artwork through photoshop and create a repeat print. Attendees should have access to and knowledge in photoshop.

Instructor

Design Development

Description
Throughout the course of this workshop, participants will explore the creative design process, from sketching on paper to developing ideas on mannequins. The sessions will result in a finished garment with up-cycling as a key element. Participants should have knowledge in pattern-making and sewing.

Fashion Trust Arabia winner and luxury ready-to-wear designer Roni Helou is a Creative Space Beirut graduate whose collections, campaigns and story has been featured across an array of international publications, such as Vogue, The Business of Fashion, CNN, WWD, Grazia Middle East and more. As well as managing his eponymous brand, Roni devotes his time to teaching and mentoring students at Creative Space Beirut, and is an advocate of human and animal rights.

Introduction to Sewing

The primary objective of this workshop is to establish a strong foundation in  the art of sewing. Open to all, this workshop welcomes both beginners and those with experience. Aline will provide participants with a comprehensive understanding of industrial sewing machines, how they work and how to make best use of them. The workshop will result in the construction of a kimono.

Advanced Sewing

Description
The primary objective of this workshop is to strengthen a foundational knowledge of sewing, guiding its participants in understanding  how to work with more complicated garments in different fabrics and textures. This workshop is most suitable for those with more sewing experience, as well as those who have already taken Aline's beginner class, 'Introduction to Sewing'. The workshop will result in the construction of a bomber jacket.

Natural Textile Hand Dyeing
with Nour Hage

Description
The objective of this workshop is to learn the basics of natural textile dyeing. The participants will learn to experiment with different dyeing techniques whilst staying eco-friendly. The workshop aims to teach attendees how to dye textiles using natural, affordable materials that are 100% safe to be returned to the earth at the end of their lifecycle.

Instructor
Nour Hage is an award-winning Lebanese designer. She graduated in 2010 from Parsons The New School For Design (Parsons Paris) with a BFA in Fashion Design. After stints at Elie Saab and Oscar de la Renta, she joined the design team at Damir Doma in Paris. In 2012, she moved to Beirut, where she decided, aged 24, to start her own line. In 2014 she was awarded the prestigious Boghossian Foundation Prize.

Creative Draping
with Caroline Simonelli

(June 17, 2019)

Lebanese-American designer Caroline Simonelli teaches fashion design at Parsons the New School for Design in New York. Prior to her career in education, Caroline worked as a fashion designer for an array of women’s apparel. Having developed her own line of volume and couture collections, Caroline also provided Large Sizes for QVC, Bloomingdales and Saks Fifth Avenue. With more than 25 years of experience in designing women’s clothes, she now divides her time between teaching at Parsons in New York City, and giving classes and workshops to students and the public at Creative Space Beirut, Lebanon. Caroline is also the designer between Creative Space Beirut’s in-house brand, CSB ready-to-wear.

OBJECTIVE

Caroline will be leading two creative draping workshops. The first is ideal for beginners, while the second is an advanced one and will require previous knowledge and experience. It isn’t compulsory to register for both workshops – please select the one that suits your needs and abilities.

Soft Creative Draping (17th June – 1st July)
Ideal for beginners, the soft creative draping workshop will encourage participants to develop a core understanding of bias draping. It will cover everything you need to know about soft creative draping, and requires enthusiasm, persistence and drive!

Advanced Creative Draping (8th July – 22nd July)
The second part of Caroline Simonelli’s creative draping workshop is an advanced one. These sessions will investigate an array of pieces - including peg skirts and bias jackets - and teach you how to make a creative interpretation of each.

OBJECTIVE

The objective of this workshop is to create a relaxed, stress-free environment for the attendees by way of providing a comfortable space that enables them to experience and enjoy fast sketching. The attendees will gain a more thorough understanding of art, composition and layout principles. The workshop aims to improve attendees’ concentration while ultimately creating an artistic outcome.

METHODOLOGY

This course will involve group work, fast sketching, blind sketching, one-line drawing, live sketching, participant interaction and challenges.


OUTLINE

Week One:

Canvas 1: Introduction (22nd April 2019)
The first session will involve an introduction to the course outline, meeting the instructor and understanding the materials you will be needing throughout. This introductory session will feature expression exercises.

Canvas 2: Challenges and Skills (24th April 2019)
This will be a relaxed class, where participants will attempt several challenges (such as live sketching, one-line drawing and drawing with alternative hands) while testing their abilities to create a canvas.

Week Two:

Canvas 3: Blind Sketching (29th April 2019)
Participants will attempt to sketch while blindfolded!

Canvas 4: Fill the Empty Space (1st May 2019)
This session will feature group work in pairs or small numbers. One canvas will be given to each group, and all participants will create a certain theme. This will teach those involved to trust their instincts while improving their storytelling and sketching skills.

Week Three:

Canvas 5: Harmony - One Line (6th May 2019)
This session will involve group work where every participant will have different colored pens and use one canvas.

Canvas 6: Follow the Rhythm (8th May 2019)
Participants will sketch while listening to music.

Week Four:

Canvas 7: New Mediums, Own Style (13th May 2019)
Here, the class will try sketching with other mediums, such as paint, watercolors, chalk and wax crayons.

Canvas 8: Individual Canvas - Final Product (15th May 2019)
Participants will create their own canvases using mediums of their choice. This will be discussed beforehand between the instructor and participants.

Joy of Repetition Workshop

rhythms and patterns floating over a surface or thousands of small details
building dynamic volumes. The theme for this workshop is multiplicity and repetitions.
We will be working with links and chains, translating textile techniques into different materials.

The workshop will consist of collecting ideas and material, sketching, hands-on material work,
individual coaching, and group discussions.
